The Travel Air 5000 transport "Woolaroc" (NX-869) winner of the Dole-Hawaiian flight in mid-1927 taxing at North Island. Winning aircraft was flown by Art Goebel with Lt V.B. Davis as navigator. Haase collection, courtesy of the San Diego Aero Space Museum. J.M.F. “Bunny” Haase was a Navy Chief photographer who documented all the aviation activities from the early 1920 through the early 1930s at North Island that at the time encompassed the Army’s Rockwell Field and NAS San Diego. His large collection also covers civilian and Army aircraft as well. His air-to-air photographs are featured in many aviation reference books but usually under the credit line of US Navy. Chief Haase also participated in the second Alaskan Aerial Survey in 1929 and was responsible for the first US motion picture of the sun’s eclipse done in 1930 that was done from an aircraft.

Line up of interesting aircraft at North Island. L to right Boeing NB-1 #VN-D11-4 (A6792) , Vought UO-1 VJ-D11-3 (A-6470) and a Travel Air transport "Woolaroc" NX 869. Circa 1927. Woolaroc was the winner of the Dole Fight from Oakland to Hawaii. It was flown by Art Gobel and navigated by Lt W.V. Davis USn of VF-6B. several of the 14 planes involed in the race were serviced at North island before proceeding to Oakland. The Woolaroc came back after winning the race to North Island for display.
